The US has published the report on the International Narcotics Control Strategy, while in the chapter on Albania, a scanner is made of the situation, expressing support for SPAK in the fight against crime and corruption.
The report highlights the attacks that SPAK has carried out not only against criminal organizations, but also against people in power, particularly mentioning former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who was declared 'non grata' in 2021 by the administration of President Joe Biden, and continues to be treated as such by the Trump administration2.
Analyzing the Vetting process, the DASH report emphasizes that during 1 year, 22 judges and prosecutors were dismissed, some of whom had contacts with crime.
The US also seeks to combat the influence of criminal groups in government and society.
“ During the 12 months leading up to October 2024, an independent Albanian commission supported by the US and EU dismissed 22 judges and prosecutors for unjustified wealth, with some dismissals also based on contacts with organised crime.
Albania must continue efforts to strengthen the rule of law, tighten money laundering regulations and oversight, and combat the influence of organized crime groups throughout government and society.
Albanian law enforcement should expand cooperation with international counterparts to proactively target Albanian international criminal networks.
Albania should implement existing laws, follow regulatory guidance, conduct effective oversight, improve law enforcement cooperation, and expand the capacity of police and prosecutors to focus on corruption, money laundering, and complex economic crimes. Albania should fully implement the 2016 and 2017 criminal code reforms ,” the State Department said.
