The IHP raises the alarm about the danger of rodents in the capital, while the lack of disinfection and urban degradation are turning Tirana into an ideal habitat for new epidemics.
The Public Health Institute issued a public statement two days ago following the hantavirus alarm, after being asked to calm the situation.
The statement, in fact, was schematic, more political than professional.
This is because the Institute of Public Health has long raised the alarm about an invasion of harmful rodents in Tirana, namely rats, in major public spaces, mainly in the food and service trade network, connected to the sewage system.
These areas have not been disinfected for at least two years according to the established protocol, which provides for interventions every month.
Expert reports emphasize that for a year, specifically after the arrest of Erion Veliaj, the rats in Tirana have not only been celebrating, but have become one of the most influential "interest groups" in the city.
This situation does not only appear near garbage bins, where rats seem to have their own "governance centers", but also in the most important areas of the metropolis, precisely where traffic and urban life are most intense.
In fact, some "representatives" of Tirana's rat mafia have been shared on social media by influencers and tourists who have visited Albania, turning this species into a kind of new tourist "attraction".
This "coincidence" of rat power in Tirana coincides precisely with the alarms about hantavirus, or the so-called "Andean virus", which is being seen as one of the new global fears.
The deadly disease, which is spread mainly by rodents, seems to have found its friendliest habitat in Tirana.
The Institute of Public Health has several alarming reports on this situation, but neither the Municipality of Tirana nor the Ministry of Health seem to have taken the problem seriously.
It seems as if the rats have become a silent ally of the majority, which is treating them the same as criminal groups: just don't disturb them.
You only have to look near any sewer manhole, bar, or service unit to see healthy rodents fearlessly demonstrating their presence.
This happens precisely because there is a lack of a regular screening and disinfection campaign, which by law must be carried out every month to prevent the spread of dangerous epidemics from such rodents.
Rodents that have historically brought the most serious diseases, starting with the plague.
But even though the reports are alarming, there is still no serious movement to stop this danger that threatens every citizen, especially the most vulnerable: children and the elderly.
Meanwhile, IHP reports emphasize that even in the complex of the 'Mother Teresa' University Hospital Center, the "Mihals" have taken control of the territory, becoming the dominant "gang" in the area./ Pamphlet
