The prestigious magazine "The Economist" has proposed a radical overhaul of the international asylum system, arguing that the existing mechanisms, created after World War II, are now completely outdated and do not meet the needs of today's world.
In its latest editorial, "Scrap the asylum system — and build something better," The Economist argues that the current system is broken and causing political and social chaos in host countries. According to the magazine, the ideal solution would be a clear separation between political asylum and economic migration. Asylum seekers should be assisted in neighboring countries or regions close to their origin, while economic migration should have transparent and well-controlled channels.
How does this affect Albania and the region?
Albania and the Balkan region have historically been a transit route for asylum seekers towards the European Union. If this proposal were to be implemented, Albania would be one of the first countries to face increased responsibilities to handle asylum requests in a humane and effective manner.
This would bring challenges but also financial and infrastructural opportunities for our country. Funding and logistical support from the European Union would be essential to face this new task.
What should Albania do to prepare?
First, institutional and infrastructural capacities for managing migration flows must be strengthened. This requires close regional cooperation, as well as greater commitment from the European Union and international institutions for financial and technical support.
If Albania prepares properly, it can benefit from this global remodeling, positioning itself as a reliable partner in the region for managing migration crises.
