The Return of American Executive Orders in the Balkans: Diplomacy or Dictate?
Brendan Hanrahan's visit to Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia is not just a diplomatic move, but a clear message for the entire Balkan region. This is the first visit by a senior American official since Donald Trump's re-election in 2024 and represents the clear return of American politics dominated by "executive orders."
Dušan Janjić, a Serbian analyst and expert on Balkan politics, interprets this visit as indicative of a US approach that is replacing traditional diplomatic policy with business policy, imposing conditions and agendas instead of open dialogue and cooperation.
Trump, known for using strong and unilateral methods in diplomacy, seems to have chosen the Balkans to show once again that American influence is not negotiated, but imposed. For Albania and the region, this is a wake-up call to wake up and understand that integration and cooperation with international partners must be balanced and without conditions that violate sovereignty.
If Hanrahan's visit is a prelude to executive orders, the Balkans are on the verge of a new diplomacy, which instead of stabilization and peace, could pave the way for new tensions and divisions.
Therefore, Albania must be cautious and carefully evaluate every diplomatic move coming from Washington, because today we are facing the reality of an administration that does not recognize foreign policy as cooperation, but as imposition. And this could be dangerous for an already fragile region.
It is time for official Tirana to carefully and courageously choose its position in this diplomatic game. The time of executive orders should be behind us, not part of the region's future./ Pamphlet
