Gambling will return to Albania after 5 years, as the socialist majority has changed its mind.
Amid tensions and clashes in the parliament, the SP has approved the law for the restoration of gambling.
Under the sound of whistles, the parliament voted today (February 15) the law for the return of sports betting with 72 votes in favor.
Under the sound of whistles, the deputies blocked the work of the Assembly, making it impossible to conduct a normal session.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla, in her introductory speech said that the interpellation requested by the DP with the Prime Minister regarding the incinerators, will be held with the Minister of State Elisa Spiropali for joking about the commitments of the head of the government.
PD MP Arbi Agalliu refused to do the interpellation with Spiropali, causing the Speaker of the Assembly to go directly to the voting of draft laws.
After the created situation, Speaker Lindita Nikolla opened the voting procedure, passing the laws that were foreseen in the agenda.
In this Thursday's session, unlike other times, the deputies of the Freedom Party and Lilzim Basha and his deputies were present.
The betting saga by the Rama government
Although it was expected to be voted on in the session of February 8 in the Assembly, the majority withdrew in the last minutes the draft law that restores sports betting in Albania.
The sports betting draft remained for months in the drawers of the Assembly.
Expected to be voted on at the beginning of last year, the adoption of this law had turned into a soap opera that ended today.
Initially, the draft was delayed by the Ministry of Finance, which submitted it to the Parliament last summer. Then, the discussions of the draft law were suspended for several months by the chairman of the Economy Commission, Eduart Shalsi, who asked for more time to review the draft.
Shalsi proposed changing several articles of the draft, including the floor of quotas that must be owned by foreign companies with experience in companies that will receive a sports betting license, as well as lowering the age for players from 21 to 18 years old.
The return of betting has been strongly opposed by the opposition, which has accused the prime minister of seizing the market for customers and people close to him. Meanwhile, according to her, this law is another initiative through which the government aims to facilitate money laundering in the Albanian economy.
