Police siege of News24, Gjekmarkaj recalls the words of Father Zef Pllumi: These

Democratic Party MP Agron Gjekmarkaj has reacted sharply after the police forces surrounded the buildings of "News24", "Panorama", "Balkanweb" and "Gazeta Shqiptare" today.

"What is happening today borders on the unbelievable. The attack on them is a punch in the face of every citizen. Albania is rapidly losing what it has gained with great effort decade after decade, rising, falling and rising again," said Gjekmarkaj.

He accused the government of using police violence to target a free and professional media, calling it a flagrant violation of democratic principles. “Policing the media is a challenge to freedom, a rejection of democracy as a principle, a trampling on integration as a centuries-old dream. These are fascist and communist methods,” he said.

Gjekmarkaj added that the dictatorship's Albania was more open about its repressive intentions, while today, according to him, the government hides this behind a facade of false liberalism. He also addressed the ambassadors of democratic countries accredited in Tirana, asking them not to behave as if they were in a normal country, a NATO member and an EU aspirant.

"Today, the blindness and deafness of Albanian society are being targeted," he concluded, recalling the words of Father Zef Pllumi: 'These people will not listen if you put a stick in their mouths.'
