Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, during a meeting regarding food safety, said that the salmonella case in Albania was only discovered when Prime Minister Edi Rama fell ill.
" It's only known when the prime minister gets sick with salmonella, because until then it wasn't known and no one was held accountable."
Who brought this? Someone close to the government, so there was no investigation. He also resigned when Rama got sick, saying he had it from turtles, he had it from chickens for sure.
A reform in this sector is necessary. It should be a central sector in national security.
"There must be funding. We will double-triple the budget in this area. The safety of medicines and food is very important ," he said.
Berisha said that control over food in Albania is in the 'hands of the mafia.' He described the situation as alarming, emphasizing that it is the "state mafia" itself that controls the food safety sector, which according to him is one of the most important for the health of citizens.
The democratic leader stated that Albania does not meet any of the European Union standards for food safety, emphasizing that despite the presence of qualified experts, they are excluded from the decision-making processes. According to him, the controls are carried out by corrupt structures, which hinder the involvement of foreign investors and the development of the sector with European quality.
He also harshly criticized the way public procurements are managed, saying that in 99% of cases they are won by Albanian companies, while foreigners are excluded through deliberate bureaucracy. “They have set a rule that documents are needed for 38 days, and the foreigner appears only after the procurement has been signed,” he declared, calling this a deliberate obstacle to fair competition.
Berisha stressed that food security is directly linked to the health of citizens and called for immediate intervention to remove this sector from the hands of mafia interests.
