During his stay in Tirana, James Cleverly will promote relations between the United Kingdom and Albania. It will build on the Joint Communiqué agreed between Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Edi Rama in December 2022. The Communiqué sets out new areas of cooperation in law enforcement and the return of those who have arrived illegally in the United Kingdom, as well as strengthening economic development.
At the International Airport of Tirana, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside the Albanian Minister of the Interior, will officially open the Police Station, Rinas, where the Joint Immigration Task Force is located, responsible for the coordination of measures and operational actions, to fight smugglers and traffickers of human beings, who make the passage of illegal immigrants from Albania to the United Kingdom.
To increase trade relations between the United Kingdom and Albania, the Foreign Minister will promote the British Chamber of Commerce in the country. The chamber will help grow the economies of both countries, it will be launched at an event at Western Balkans University, a higher education institution, which is developing partnerships with British universities and giving scholarships to all those who feel under pressure to leave Northern Albania.
