The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen appealed for the Western Balkans to work closely with the EU to become part of the union.
"The first time this happens in the region. We are witnessing a terrible war that Russia has launched on Ukraine. We have also seen a horrific attack by Hamas, which has killed more than 1,440 men, women and children, for the sole reason that they are Jewish. In these times we need best friends. Let's work for you to become part of the EU so that together we can achieve lasting peace and prosperity as well," she said.
She emphasized that the Berlin Process started in 2014, while so far 16 billion euros have been used out of 30 planned for the Western Balkans.
"The Berlin process started in 2014. The aim is to move forward in a real way in the region but also regional economic cooperation. The aim is to move forward in the region for economic cooperation. We have laid strong foundations with the economic investment plan of 30 billion euros. The results are already being shown, 16 billion euros have been determined and have already been used ," said Leyen.
The President of the European Commission also said that the economies of the Western Balkans and the EU are very far from each other. Leyen also said that reforms are needed to move forward.
"I want to talk a little about this issue, our economies are still very far from each other, the economies are 35% of the EU average, we must bring it closer to our average. This will be achieved by the plan, this is the idea, from the strength of the values that we unite the countries that become part of the EU, the second powerful part is about economic expansion, countries have had great economic growth, our single market has expanded, these are the principles we need and have used, in specific areas of opening the doors of the single European market, we must show it, such as the movement of goods and services, cashless payments to make some of the elements easier of course and opening the doors, countries must complete their regional market , it is a condition that the countries of the Western Balkans offer conditions to their neighbors, in order to move forward, deep reforms are needed. It is a stimulus to open the doors in economic terms, but the opening of borders within the Western Balkans. Only by working together we can make it possible for BP to come to the heart of the EU. The message is that these are decision-making comments, don't let opportunities slip away ," said Vion der Leyen.
