Nancy VanHorn, the US charge d'affaires in Tirana, seems to be paying attention to the parliamentary agenda on the eve of the start of the new session, after the winter break.
And as the Parliament resumes its work on May 19, VanHorn has scheduled meetings with the leaders of the two largest parliamentary groups, the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, as well as with the Speaker of Parliament Niko Peleshi.
The American diplomat will initially meet with Taulant Balla at around 12:00 and two hours later, at 2:00 PM, she will meet with Gazment Bardhi, the head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group.
The American diplomat's meetings in the Assembly come at a time when there has been strong criticism from the opposition about the way the Parliament has functioned during the first session, while the DP and its allies have announced the launch of a wave of protests until the fall of the Rama Government. There have also been voices from the opposition ranks about a conditioning of the opposition's relations with the Assembly, which has happened at least with the Parliamentary Committees, when opposition MPs have not participated in the meetings.
The Assembly has two very important reforms on its agenda, electoral and territorial, for which the relevant Commissions have been established with representatives from the ruling and opposition parties.
