Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, stated in a statement to the media today that Albania will evaluate a possible request from the United States to use the Kuçova air base to conduct military operations against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
"It remains to be assessed when such a request will come. The Kuçova base is a NATO base and I believe that all decision-making is related to Albania's inclusion in the alliance," Nufi told the media after the government meeting.
Several European countries have so far rejected the US request to allow bases located in their countries to be used to attack Iran.
Nufi also announced approval for the authorization of the KAYO company to negotiate and conclude agreements with 2 companies for the production of floating vehicles and drones.
"We approved 2 VKMs authorizing the KAYO company to negotiate to conclude agreements with two companies for the production of floating vehicles and drones. These two decisions of the Council of Ministers are significant, it is the first time that the opportunity for the production of floating vehicles is created, this is something that makes us feel proud and we are close to finalizing the agreements with this authorization given by the Council of Ministers. It will be an incentive not only for the military industry, but also an incentive for employment, creating a genuine step in the construction of floating vehicles," said Nufi.
The Kuçova Air Base was inaugurated on March 4, 2024. This base, which was used by the Warsaw Pact during the communist period, will now be used for NATO exercises and operations.
NATO military aircraft were part of the inauguration of the Kuçova base, with aerial demonstrations along with American "Black Hawk" helicopters.
