The deputy of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku, has reacted in relation to the international scandal for the transport of toxic waste originating from Albania and another with a passage in our country.
In a video published on social networks, Tabaku thanked the investigative media that discovered this issue, stressing that full transparency and responsibility from state institutions is necessary.
Tabaku underlined that there are two different loads of toxic waste that have been identified so far: one originating from Kosovo, which ended up in China, and the other destined for Thailand, which originated from Albania. She called for immediate clarifications from the government and responsible institutions, including the Ministry of Environment, the Port of Durrës, the Customs Directorate and the State Police.
The PD MP also raised questions about the number of such shipments that may have happened without the public's knowledge and expressed her concern for the endemic corruption that has engulfed Albanian institutions.
Further, Tabaku described the Port of Durrës as an "inn without gates," emphasizing that this scandal has exposed the depth of the corruption problem in the country. She raised concerns that a country that has no ports not only becomes a concern for others but also endangers its security as it is not known which ships enter our port with this level of corruption.
At the end of the video, Tabaku said that this corrupt system must change, as it has affected every cell of Albanian society and has become a major obstacle to the country's development.
"We followed with concern the scandal of international proportions for the transport of toxic waste originating from Albania.
First, I want to thank the two small investigative media that followed this scandal to the end, uncovering what the international media had made public only a few days ago. While I am waiting for a response from the official institutions for the requests I sent them, it is necessary to clarify some very important elements.
First, it is about two different cargoes: the first one, originating from Kosovo, ended up in a Chinese port. For this load, responsibility also falls on the Albanian institutions, including the Ministry of Environment, the Port of Durrës, the Customs Directorate and all intermediary links.
Secondly, for the second load, with final destination the port of Thailand, which has the source and origin from Albania, the responsibility again falls on all Albanian institutions, starting from the Ministry of Environment, to Customs and the Directorate of the Port of Durrës.
Have there been other cases where the Port of Durrës and Albanian institutions have been involved in this international traffic? Have there been loads that have passed through the Port of Durrës from countries that are probably embargoed?
Thirdly, this scandal highlighted and exposed the corrupt system that prevails in Albania today. Should the Port of Durrës appear as an 'inn without gates' in the international media to show us that corruption at all levels has become endemic?
We will change this system. This system, which unfortunately has affected every cell of our society", writes Tabaku.
