Tabaku: SPAK report highlights the penetration of dirty money into the economy
Jorida Tabaku

Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, stated that the report and investigations of the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) confirm the concerns raised for years by the opposition about the penetration of criminal and corruption money into the Albanian economy.

During the reporting of the head of SPAK, Klodian Braho, the deputy heads of the institution and the head of the National Bureau of Investigation in the Commission for Civic Initiatives, Cooperation and Institutional Oversight, Tabaku focused on the connection between organized crime, corruption and money laundering.

"The SPAK report and investigations are confirming the concerns that the opposition has raised for years about the penetration of crime and corruption money into the Albanian economy," the MP said.

According to Tabaku, the data presented by SPAK show that organized crime, corruption and money laundering are no longer separate phenomena, but function as part of a single system.

"These are no longer isolated phenomena, but part of an interconnected system that produces illicit money and then funnels it into the formal economy ," she said.

The MP appreciated the fact that SPAK has identified real estate and businesses with high use of physical cash as the main destinations of the money laundering process.

Another concern raised by her was related to companies with nominal ownership.

"Investigations should not stop only at the people formally placed at the head of the companies, but should follow the flow of money to the controllers and real beneficiaries of these schemes ," Tabaku declared.

She also requested that investigations against senior officials not only focus on acts of corruption, but also on the laundering of proceeds from it.

"The crackdown on corruption remains incomplete without identifying how illegally obtained money is laundered, invested and returned to the economy through companies, properties and construction," said the MP.

In conclusion, Tabaku requested that the construction sector be included in future SPAK reports as a high-risk sector for money laundering. According to her, "protecting SPAK and strengthening its capacities are necessary to crack down on the system that has linked political corruption, organized crime and the dirty money economy."
