The prime minister of Albania, Edi Rama, has canceled the joint meeting of the government with the Kosovo government, scheduled for Wednesday, due to ongoing tensions in the Serb-populated north of Kosovo.
Given the circumstances, he suggested a smaller format for the meeting in the Kosovar city of Gjakova, Rama said on Tuesday evening. But this has been rejected by the Kosovar Prime Minister, Albin Kurti.
The Government of Kosovo has reacted with regret to the cancellation. At the meeting, 13 bilateral agreements in the fields of economy, justice, education and culture should be signed, according to a cabinet statement published in Pristina late Tuesday evening. The victims of the cancellation are the citizens.
Tensions fueled by Belgrade
In late May, violent Serbs attacked NATO troops in northern Kosovo, which is almost exclusively inhabited by Serbs. Dozens were injured in the clashes. Kosovo was part of Serbia. In 2008 it was declared independent. Until today, Serbia has not recognized this step. Belgrade uses the ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo repeatedly to incite tensions.
Serbia blamed Kurti's government for the latest conflict because it has yet to enshrine any territorial autonomy rights for Kosovo Serbs. Rama, who maintains a good relationship with the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, recently presented a concept for such an autonomous status, without being asked by anyone.
