Going back in time, in the terrible year of 1997, journalist Sokol Balla asked the prime minister about the sinking of the military ship Katerit i Rada, where 81 people lost their lives and where Italy was held responsible for this tragedy of the Albanian nation.
In an interview for the "Real Story" show on ABC News, Rama said that Italy has apologized in all forms, adding that this is a reminder that helps us see ourselves and not forget what situations we have been through.
Excerpt from the interview:
Sokol Balla : Of course, but know that I am a little emotional in repeating that question that I asked you, perhaps in fact and because of the situation, you did not answer in full since you were under pressure from many journalists and many provocative questions. But there is a tragedy in March '97, where 81 Albanians lost their lives, where the Italian press and authorities themselves found an Italian military ship responsible at least for sinking the Kateri i Rada and where 81 people lost their lives, at least 81 people and the Italian state has not apologized for this, Mr. Prime Minister. It has not apologized at least formally, perhaps it has apologized in other ways.
Edi Rama : I think they have done it in all forms and more than just to see from the Italian state, this memory helps us to see ourselves and not to forget what situations we have been through and what tragic periods we have lived in. And of course, without ever being satisfied with what we have achieved, we must not forget how far we have come and be confident that if we have overcome all those abysses and all those mountains, in the true sense of the word, and today we manage to sit at the same table with the government of Italy, a format that we started at the beginning with the government of Kosovo and today we have with the government of Italy. It is undoubtedly one more reason to have a lot of faith in tomorrow.
