"Meta's inhumane treatment in detention"/ Lamallari responds to
Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari

The Minister of Justice, Besfort Lamallari, answered questions from MP Tedi Blushi regarding the treatment of former President Ilir Meta in detention, based on the Ombudsman's report.

Lamallari underlined that the report never uses the term "degrading and inhumane treatment." He added that Ilir Meta is treated the same as any other detainee at the "Jordan Misja" detention center.

"I understand Blushi's motivation to request an interpellation and to draw attention to Meta, but I would like this hall and this interpellation to be used for the mission we have, which is that of representing the hundreds and thousands of citizens who expect from us, and not for the discourse of personal names that the opposition is failing to leave behind.

You are not talking about citizens, you are not talking about 2,655 such people with names and surnames, women, minors, heads of families who are still behind bars today without a guilty verdict, unlike us, wanting to convey the concern raised by the EC about the long time spent in detention or the need to intervene in the criminal code to guarantee dignified treatment for detainees, and not just for personal names.

Referring to the AP report in full, the concerns raised by this report should be addressed and above all the fact whether this report is a general recommendation. The Minister of Justice and the Directorate of Prisons are familiar with the AP recommendations. These are general recommendations. It is not a report that finds specific violations or individual responsibility; the report does not at any time use the terminology "degrading and inhuman treatment".

The recommendations of this report are in the process of being reviewed according to legal deadlines. The General Directorate of Prisons has requested information from the Jordan Misja Penitentiary Institution and has strengthened administrative supervision with a focus on preventing any practice that could be considered a violation of human dignity. There is no investigation against the leaders or staff of the Jordan Misja Penitentiary Institution, nor has any investigation been initiated, even based on the recommendations of the Prosecutor General. No administrative violations are found in this recommendation.

The allegation of political imprisonment was also mentioned. The minister, the government, and the AP will not say this in the report; on the contrary, the report confirms the opposite: there is no political persecution. We will not have a violation of freedom of expression, as long as there is a balance.

"Security and dignity are guaranteed; he is treated like any other detainee, respecting his rights and obligations, and guaranteeing that he is treated equally, regardless of previous state positions. The penitentiary system cannot be an instrument of political battle for the interests of the day, neither a parliamentary platform nor a television studio ," Lamallari said.
