The Mayor of Tirana has spoken about his interrogation for 8 hours by SPAK, a week ago. Veliaj says that he is not under investigation by justice, but emphasized that he simply gave his contribution to the truth.
"Today I am neither accused nor under investigation. I gave my contribution for the truth", says the head of the Municipality of Tirana.
Veliaj explained to "abcnews" why he addressed SPAK investigators with the term 'colleague'. He said that he addresses with the term colleague, all those who are public servants, including cleaners. Veliaj emphasized that there he saw a professional institution with trained people.
"I had the opportunity to communicate as a person in the know. The mayor is definitely aware. I was aware of the old Tirana project with the World Bank and IFC, as I was aware of the new project that came from an unsolicited request, as I am also aware of the difference between the two. So, in this respect it was not an advertisement for SPAK, rather it was a call and an appeal first to reduce the collective hysteria. Today I am neither accused nor under investigation. But as a person in the know, not only me but anyone else who knows about the circumstances, has a legal obligation to be a collaborator" , said Veliaj, among other things.
Excerpt from the interview:
Erion, last week I believe was a day you will remember, as let's just say new justice is something we all love until the day it doesn't come knocking at our door and truth be told they were 8 hours long in front of SPAK prosecutors .
Veliaj: There were two boys, I know that there was a big debate about calling them colleagues, but who knows me, I have also mentioned it in other shows, I also call those who clean as colleagues. So, whoever works as a public servant is an employee of the Republic. It works for our common mission for this country to move forward, it has been in this aspect not that I have a special acquaintance, it was the first time. But it seemed fair to me to reflect, at a professional institution. I saw prepared people and not, let's say, with that carelessness that we typically think works in institutions. I saw people who knew the content of what we were talking about. And I had the opportunity to communicate as a person in the know. But as a person in the know, not only me but anyone else who is aware of the circumstances, has a legal obligation to be cooperative and I remember only in our joint interviews, I can have it almost in all the recent interviews, I said when I can't wait for the day to come that I can't wait to tell my truth.
However, it's different when you sit there in front of me, I get the impression…
Veliaj: Definitely. The way truth works is just like that puzzle game, everyone has their piece. Without everyone's pieces, the whole picture cannot be created, so I am glad that I contributed with my piece and I believe we have established a relationship, where starting from the Prime Minister, to the youngest socialist who has joined, he feels proud that a European institution has been created. He feels proud that an institution has been created which operates on the basis of facts, questions, and circumstances. There are some people who are categorized as those who are accused. Those under investigation, others with knowledge of the circumstances. This is a city that has 1 thousand open construction sites, there are a thousand debates. I'm sure we're being mentioned at a thousand tables as we speak. What we can do is talk about what we know to be our truth. Therefore, in this sense, I believe that the legitimacy of SPAK comes from everyone's contribution. When everyone contributes, if you go to 'Murat Toptani' street, which is the street of the municipality, say long live SPAK and continue the work, and then the same group, to 'Mustafa Matohiti' street, go to the balcony there, SPAK says, then there is a problem here, it's a schizophrenia that doesn't work that you can't be in three ways to have three different opinions. So, as far as we're concerned and as far as all this energy for the new justice is concerned, I believe it's been worth it. It was worth the vote, the public support, and what I tried to do was a modest contribution to this public support of an institution that should be given the chance and support to function.
