Faced with SPAK, Veliaj: I don't need help from the party, SP colleagues

The head of Tirana Municipality, Erion Veliaj, has commented on his confrontation with justice. He said that he is not disappointed by his SPAK colleagues, stressing that he does not expect applause at all, but adds that every person must do his duty wherever he is.

He further emphasized that it is important to encourage working people, to support more success and not cheer for failure.

Asked on the show "Real Store" if he asked for help from the party, Veliaj said that it did not happen as his SP colleagues are themselves in many battles.

Part of the interview

You had a tour where you met some of the mayors of the most important European cities, with which Tirana also has direct relations thanks to the personal relationships you have, what I don't like to be honest and I say it because a person is known on the day of difficult, and of course this is a difficult day for the municipality of Tirana, facing two important issues with the new justice. What impresses me is that you are welcomed, applauded and appreciated even for the concrete things you do, the placement of the statue of Skanderbeg in Paris is fantastic, but what impresses me is that they feel a kind of deafening silence from those who normally they should have been the first to defend themselves

Which are?

People from your party...

First, I didn't ask for it

I know you didn't ask for it, this might as well have been an unsolicited offer...

No, as long as I have not made any such request, I have no such disappointment. Because I believe that SP colleagues are themselves in many battles. The battle in the parliament, in the constituencies, to advance community causes that require a lot of commitment and I have not asked them for anything like that, because I strongly believe that in the final, the work remains in the final as opposed to the justice we had where the guards back here, they were put in the basement and kept for three days, today, because he is the prime minister of the country, because he is a minister, because he is the mayor, he is not a guarantee for anyone.

And we say about the work you have done, well done, about the things that need to be clarified, here is the place to clarify these things. And I believe this is the reflection that keeps SP, in deep difference with others. I also judge that I have not made any sacrifice that you ask the mayor of Paris, it definitely seems to have used personal connections, I have done my duty.

Even the use of personal connections is actually an instrument to advance causes that interest Albania and Tirana. So, in this sense, I have done my duty and I expect neither applause nor applause for something that every mayor of Tirana, today and tomorrow, must do non-stop.

To promote the city, our national figures, Skanderbeg Square in Paris, at the time it was established it was in what is called the 19th district, but keep in mind that even Paris is only expanding. And what pleases me is that Ms. Hidalgo's proposal was to restore the square first. I can't wear a bijou in a square that was a ghetto, today the square is ultra modern, new trees were also planted, all the investments were made and today we are on the threshold where we have to decide whether it will be a statue or Skenderbeu on a horse.

So we will decide, let's say, on the aesthetics or exactly on the monument that will be placed. The fact that we have reached this day is a very good thing, but it is my duty, I do not expect applause because every Albanian must do this work wherever he is. What happens, Konica often said, is that we cannot forgive each other's success. Even the difference between a culture like the American culture where everyone says 'well done, good try', is part of a mentality that needs to change. We should encourage success rather than cheer failure and failure.
