The Central Election Commission has three scenarios ready for electronic voting in the May 11 parliamentary elections.
The CEC is expected to place the drafts on the table of political parties to begin negotiations regarding the implementation of electronic voting in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Because the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, has refused to extend electronic voting to the district level, the CEC in the 3 scenarios proposes electronic voting only in some administrative units, Report TV reports.
Scenario 1, proposed by the CEC, provides for electronic voting in Administrative Units no. 1, no. 3, no. 5, no. 8, no. 9, no. 10 of the Municipality of Tirana, as well as the Administrative Units of Bërxull, Prezë and Vorë of the Municipality of Vorë.
Scenario 2 provides for electronic voting and counting in Administrative Units No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 9, No. 10 of the Municipality of Tirana, as well as the Administrative Units, Bërxull, Prezë and Vorë of the Municipality of Vorë.
Scenario 3 foresees electronic voting and counting in administrative units no. 5 and no. 10 of the Municipality of Tirana, the administrative units of Bërxull, Prezë and Vorë of the Municipality of Vorë, as well as the extension to regions 1,2,3,4,5 of the Municipality of Durrës.
Electronic voting and counting was first tested in the 2021 elections, in unit 10 in the capital. In 2023, it was expanded to the municipalities of Elbasan, Kamëz and Vorë. Although these machines are expensive, they can produce results within an hour of the close of voting, avoiding hours and days of counting, which sometimes produced conflicts.
