While Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj is in detention, it is still unclear what will happen to the post of mayor of the largest municipality in the country.
The most frequently asked question is whether and when elections for a new mayor will be held, in the fall or in 2027.
According to lecturer and analyst Ermal Hasmja, who spoke on Euronews Albania's "Politics" show, even Prime Minister Edi Rama himself is facing a serious dilemma regarding this situation and the solution he should provide, weighing the arguments for and against organizing new elections in the Municipality of Tirana.
Hasimja emphasizes that Rama's hesitation to make a decision in this case shows that decision-making is not easy, given that he is between pressure to react and the political costs that such a decision could bring.
According to him, time will be the factor that will limit political maneuvering and force the Prime Minister to make a final decision on the elections.
"Edi Rama is faced with several opposing arguments. On the one hand, he is embarrassed that the mayor of Albania's largest municipality is practically behind bars. On the other hand, if he holds elections, he de facto shows and definitively withdraws support for Veliaj. And he is also obliged to provide a solution to this problem, all the more so in a reality like Albania, where everyone knows that he is the one who will decide the issue of elections, since in one way or another he controls the situation. The fact that we are at this stage where a decision has not yet been made shows that it is not easy to distinguish between the alternatives. But most likely, there will come a moment when time will play in favor of holding elections in Tirana," Hasimja said in "Politics".
