Zvërnec, Rama turns to critics: Why shouldn't Albania have its own
Costa Navarino

Rama referred to this project a day earlier during the meeting of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, where he emphasized that Costa Navarino, like the Zvërnec area, has been a protected territory, but that today it is considered one of the prides of Greek tourism.

Following protests over the cancellation of the Zvërnec project, Prime Minister Edi Rama published a video this morning from Costa Navarino in Greece, presenting it as a success story of tourism development.

Rama referred to this project a day earlier during the meeting of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, where he emphasized that Costa Navarino, like the Zvërnec area, has been a protected territory, but that today it is considered one of the prides of Greek tourism.

In his message, Rama recalls the controversies and debates that accompanied the realization of the project in Greece, comparing them with the reactions that have emerged in recent days in Albania. He notes that, despite initial reservations, the investment was realized and brought important economic and touristic results.

According to Rama, Costa Navarino today generates billions of euros in revenue, creates jobs and contributes to increasing development standards, while simultaneously maintaining the balance between nature and human activity.

The Prime Minister acknowledges that large investments are often accompanied by concerns and opposition, but states that "if the chorus of those who say 'it can't be done' because it breaks had always been heard, humanity would still be discussing whether it is worth reinventing the wheel."

In conclusion, he repeats the question he raised the day before during his public statements, whether a similar success story can be realized in Albania, even in an even more prominent form.

"Good morning and with this true story from our southern neighbors, I wish you a good day!

Costa Navarino could be called the usual story of the heralds of disaster, those who do not dream and are prejudging the dreams of others; those who do not design and are judging the projects of others; those who do not build and are slandering those who build.

The bigger the dream, the greater their prejudice, the more ambitious the project, the greater the predicted disaster, the greater the construction, the more horrific the slander of those who build.

It happened in Greece. With Costa Navarino.

Before it was built, it was said that the end of the world was coming. It was said that nature would be destroyed. It was said that biodiversity would disappear. It was said that golf courses would drink the water of generations to come and Messinia would turn into a desert. It was said that one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Mediterranean would be buried under the invasion of concrete.

Petitions. Protests. Opposition. Debates. Apocalyptic predictions.

In short, the usual repertoire of those who find it easier to predict the end of a country than its transformation.

But in the end the project was built.

And today?

Today Messinia is not a symbol of disaster. It is a symbol of the transformation of a beautiful dream into an impressive reality, thanks to a very ambitious project. One of the most prestigious tourist destinations in Europe. A region established as a rare jewel in the crown of world tourism. Thousands of well-paid jobs. Billions of euros generated for the economy. Many local businesses that have grown around. Properties that have gained value. An entire territory that has been radically transformed without losing the balance between nature and community.

And in this spectacular trajectory of transformation, here are some stubborn facts:

75% less operational carbon emissions compared to 2019. Over 185 thousand cubic meters of water recycled and reused in 2024 alone. 72% less single-use plastic. 100% electricity from renewable sources.

Let's be clear! This beautiful story of the neighboring country does not mean that every large investment is automatically good. Nor that every concern is worthless. On the contrary. But it does mean that development can never be categorically denied. A project of coexistence of development with nature can never be arbitrarily prejudiced. Because if the chorus of those who say "it can't be done" because it breaks had always been heard, humanity would still be discussing whether it is worth inventing the wheel.

There would be no airports. There would be no ports. There would be no highways. There would be no modern cities. We wouldn't even have the Europe we know today.

Costa Navarino is not just the story of one more resort. It is proof that when vision, design, capital, technology and responsibility come together in a big dream, they can change the fate of an entire territory.

"But can't Albania have its own "Costa Navarino"? Of course it does, even more globally radiant right there, in Zvërnec, but somehow this has nothing to do with the story of this post, but with the story of a project that has the ambition to create the most attractive destination on this side of the Mediterranean," Rama writes.
