Arbnor Spahiju released from prison in Serbia, returns to Kosovo

Arbnor Spahiju, a former member of the Kosovo Police Special Unit, who was in prison in Serbia on charges of aggravated murder in Banjska in 2023, was released after more than five months since his arrest at the Horgos border crossing.

KoSSev reports that this was confirmed by the Kosovo Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which reiterated that the charges brought against him by Serbian judicial authorities were “politically motivated and unfounded” and that his long-term detention “represented a violation of the right to a fair trial and fair treatment.”

The Koha e Prishtines newspaper reported last night that Spahiju arrived in Kosovo.

Spahiju was arrested on June 7 at the Horgos border crossing and, according to his lawyer, was immediately taken to the Kanjiza Detention Center.

The lawyer's initial claims are that Spahiju was questioned and brought in connection with the Banjska case, which was later confirmed by the High Court in Subotica to Radio Free Europe.

Pristina, his lawyer and his family stated that he left the service long before the conflict in this village, while top Kosovo officials demanded his release.

In the village of Banjska, on September 24, 2023, Kosovo Police Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku was killed in an ambush with an explosive device, and two police officers were injured.

In the conflict that began between the Kosovo police and a group of uniformed and armed Serbs, three Serbs from northern Kosovo were killed.

The group was led by Milan Radoicic, who claimed responsibility after videos of part of the event were released, and three Serbs were arrested in the meantime.
