Tensions are reactivated in the North of Kosovo. The reason this time is an action that the police have started in the north, which also led to the closure of 5 parallel Serbian municipalities. According to the government of Kosovo, they constitute a threat to the constitutional order. The operation was strongly criticized by the EU and the US, as there were reports of incidents.
The Kosovo Police said that after midnight, a device was thrown and exploded in Leposavic, near the facility where the municipality that operated according to the Serbian system was located earlier.
"There are no reports of injuries, while the investigations into the case are ongoing by the competent police units," said the Kosovo Police.
During the August 30 action, the Minister of Local Government Administration of Kosovo, Elbert Krasniqi, said that the District of Mitrovica of Kosovo, the parallel Municipality of Mitrovica, the parallel Municipality of Zveçan, the parallel Municipality of Zubin Potok and the parallel Municipality of Leposaviq have been closed.
After these developments, KFOR has increased its presence on the main bridge over the Ibër River.
On the bridge that separates South Mitrovica, inhabited by Albanians, from the North, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, apart from cars, a cordon of KFOR members was also seen.
The action of Pristina was immediately criticized by the official who called on the Government of Kosovo not to take unilateral and uncoordinated steps.
This move by the executive of Albin Kurti adds to the earlier dissatisfaction of the partner countries with his intention to open the bridge for vehicle traffic. The United States, the European Union and KFOR have expressed their opposition to the opening of the bridge at this moment, and while it was requested that this issue be addressed in the Brussels dialogue, the American ambassador in Pristina stated that such a step could pose a risk to American soldiers.
The NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo has also warned several times that it will not hesitate to act to respond to security-related developments.
