The acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, met on Wednesday with the Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Kreshnik Radonic.
This meeting takes place a day after the Kosovo Assembly failed to elect a President within the constitutional deadline, automatically leading the country towards new parliamentary elections. According to legal provisions, the process must be organized within a 45-day period.
The situation arose after the Vetëvendosje Movement, which holds power, failed to secure consensus with opposition parties on the election of the head of state, leaving only the path of early elections open.
To determine the date of the vote, Haxhiu must initiate consultations with political forces, in accordance with procedures. According to Radio Free Europe, two concrete options are under discussion: May 31 and June 7.
Kosovo Law Institute researcher Melos Kolshi explained that these dates comply with legal deadlines and procedural practices for organizing elections in such cases.
