John Hopkins University professor Daniel Serwer says that the US is favoring Serbia. He thinks that the US emissary for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, and the US ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, believe that they have "sent Serbia towards the West, despite clear facts to the contrary".
Recently, in an interview for "Voice of America", Ambassador Hill defended Serbian Defense Minister Milosh Vučević. Hill did not consider Vucevic's statements that "recognition of Kosovo will hit Montenegro and North Macedonia in the head - as is happening in Ukraine with all those who promoted Kosovo as an independent state" as destabilizing.
The expert on the Balkans, Serwer, says that the US's non-reaction to Vucevic's statements proves America's soft approach towards Serbia.
"America's attitude towards Serbia boils down to a policy of appeasement. I don't think that this will change until Serbia has the current diplomatic structure", said Serwer in an interview for the Malaysian medium "Pobjeda".
Serwer said Washington is silent on many things regarding Serbia, including high-level corruption, Serbian threats to use force, Belgrade-sponsored attacks on NATO troops, Vucic's refusal to commit to implementing the agreement recently reached in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
Serwer believes that the reason for this is Escobar and Hill.
"My impression is that Hill and Escobar are convinced that they have led Serbia to the West, despite convincing and clear facts to the contrary. It also seems that they give priority to Serbia, so that it allows the shipment of weapons to Ukraine," said Serwer.
Serwer believes that the letter, which was signed by 60 high-level European MPs as well as US congressmen and senators, calling on the EU, the US and Great Britain to change their soft policy towards Serbia, is not pressure. big enough
"Officials who are part of the legislature sent a letter. They want a dramatic change in the current approach to Serbia, but there is no indication that this will be achieved by the executive authorities in the US and the EU," said Serwer.
Server says more pressure is needed.
As for the "Open Balkans", which the American ambassador Hill is openly promoting, Serwer believes that this is another proof of the soft policy of the USA towards Serbia.
"The support for the 'Open Balkans' was part of soft politics," said Serwer.
Regarding the letter sent by the former Foreign Minister of Montenegro, Miodrag Vlahovic, to the American Ambassador Hill, Serwer says that Vlahovic is right.
