Asked what the consequences will be for Pristina if it does not accept the European proposal for solving the crisis in the north of Kosovo, Escobar said that not accepting it means turning your back on Europe.
The US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said today in Belgrade that the biggest challenge for Serbia is to convince the Kosovo Serbs to return to the institutions and that the Kosovo Serbs should participate in the local elections in the north of Kosovo without preconditions.
Asked what the consequences will be for Pristina if it does not accept the European proposal for solving the crisis in the north of Kosovo, Escobar said that not accepting it means turning your back on Europe.
"If they do not accept, it means that they leave the Euro-Atlantic partnership", he said.
Escobar said that the formation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities is legally binding for the Government of Kosovo and that it should be formed - with this or any future government.

The two high officials visited Kosovo, in an effort to find a solution to the tensions that have involved the 3 northern municipalities of Zvecan, Leposavichi and Zubin Potok, where the Serbs are regularly protesting against the Albanian mayors.
According to Escobar, never before has there been so much unity within the transatlantic community, as far as the issue of Kosovo is concerned.
He added that the mayors and police of Kosovo should withdraw, and that the Serbs should participate in the elections without preconditions.
