Hate speech against Albanians and calls for the resignation of Vucic, Serbian

The right-wing opposition parties in Serbia gathered on the evening of June 28 in Belgrade, as a sign of support for the Serbs from Kosovo.

Insults and hate speech against Albanians were heard among them.

The rally was organized by the "Movement for the Protection of Kosovo and Metohija", with the support of right-wing parties, including the parliamentary opposition parties: Dveri and Zavetnici.

At the rally, nationalist songs about Kosovo were heard and the banner was unfurled: "Stop terror against Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija".

The gathered waved Serbian flags and slogans "no surrender", which also featured the map of Kosovo.

They asked for Russia's support for Serbia's policy towards Kosovo.

Among their demands was the release of the Serbs arrested in the north of Kosovo, whom the Kosovo Police have identified as the organizers of the incidents in that area, during the past month.

The authorities of Serbia were asked to stop the negotiations with Kosovo and cancel all the agreements reached within the dialogue for the normalization of relations.

Criticism of Vucic

While the speakers at the protest directed insults and hate speech towards Albanians, they also criticized the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, demanding his resignation. The government in Serbia was called "traitor", while the Ohrid Agreement for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations was harshly criticized. With this agreement, the protesters said, "the Government of Serbia has handed over the southern province".

The protest took place at a time of high tensions in the north of Kosovo - an area inhabited by a majority of Serbs - and diplomatic pressure on Pristina and Belgrade to calm the situation.

It has worsened since the end of May, when the Albanian mayors of the municipalities there entered their offices, despite the resistance of the local Serbian residents.

The Serbian community in the north boycotted the April 23 elections, from which the Albanian mayors of North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq emerged.

The ongoing protests have also culminated in violence between Serbian demonstrators and soldiers of the NATO mission, KFOR. / REL
