The commander of KFOR, the Italian general Enrico Barduani, has said that the opening of the Ibri Bridge at this time would endanger the lives of the soldiers of the mission he leads.
In an interview for "Kosovo Online", he said that the decision to open the bridge should be taken within the dialogue in Brussels.
"Regarding the bridge on the Iber River, the position of NATO and KFOR was clear, transparent and consistent. Due to unresolved political issues, opening the bridge at this time would expose KFOR soldiers and the local community to an unacceptable and unnecessary risk of violence. Decisions on the opening of the bridge over the Ibër River in Mitrovica must be made through timely and effective dialogue and coordination with the international community and KFOR," he said in this interview.
Speaking about security, Barduani said that the situation on the ground is calm, but remains fragile.
"Although I will not speculate on possible scenarios in the future, I can assure you that KFOR is constantly monitoring all events that may affect security in Kosovo and beyond in the region. KFOR is well equipped and positioned to prevent escalation and respond to any security situation, in line with our UN mandate. Therefore, we will continue to ensure a safe environment and freedom of movement, at any time and in an impartial manner", declared the KFOR commander.
