The special prosecutor of Kosovo answers Kurti: No one is above the law

The Chief Prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo, Blerim Isufaj, has asked the Government of Kosovo to show commitment to the rule of law and to avoid rhetoric that "intends to politicize" justice. Answering questions about Prime Minister Albin Kurti's insistence not to respond to the prosecutors' call to testify regarding the case of state reserves, Isufaj said that the law is the same for all citizens of Kosovo, including high officials. state.

"The invitation to testify is a regular procedure and every person who is invited has a legal responsibility to cooperate with the institution of justice. I call on all institutions, including the Government of Kosovo, to show commitment to the rule of law and avoid rhetoric aimed at the politicization of justice", said Isufaj.

On December 16, Kurti did not respond to the invitation of the Special Prosecutor's Office to appear in its offices to testify regarding the state reserves case, in which the Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade (MINT), Rozeta Hajdari, is also involved. .

He even invited the prosecutors to go to his office in the Prime Minister to question him as a witness. Isufaj said that it has never happened that a prime minister is interviewed in his office, at least not during his term.

"I have no information that anyone was interviewed in the prime minister's office. While it has been five years since I have been the chief prosecutor of this Prosecutor's Office, there have been no such cases", he said.

In August 2023, several people were arrested on suspicion of misuse of state reserves. Among those arrested were MINT employees. The raids and arrests were made after the publication of several audio recordings by the Nationale in Kosovo portal, in which it was claimed that oil contracted and paid for in Poland for Kosovo's state reserves, as well as wheat reserves, had never arrived.

Hajdari had said at the time that purchases for state reserves were made in accordance with the law, but did not provide more details. Kurti defended Hajdar, saying that "there is no corruption or misuse". After being invited for an interview at the Special Prosecutor's Office, under suspicions that she has misused her official position regarding state reserves, Hajdari was silently defended in her appearance before the prosecutors.

State reserves consist of flour, oil, sugar, medicines, hygiene products, oil, etc., which can be used in the event of a state of emergency - as a result of natural disasters or wars - but also in the event of a lack of these items in market.

They are managed by the Department of State Reserves of Goods, which operates within the Ministry of Industry, Enterprise and Trade. Kosovo started collecting these reserves from 2012. They are provided with the state budget, but also from the goods that are confiscated due to criminal acts and become the property of the state. The amount of these reserves is not known, since this information, according to the Law on State Reserves, is considered a state secret, as well as their location./REL
