Attack on journalists in Leposavic, Kosovo police arrest a Serb

The Kosovo police said that they have arrested a suspect for the attack on journalists in Leposavic on June 16. According to the police, the suspect is from the Serbian community, identified by the initials, UV

The authorities said that the arrest was made in the early hours of June 19 in a village of Leposavic.

"His arrest and escort to the police station was carried out as a result of intensive investigations and securing evidence that he was involved in the attack on the media/journalists on June 16, 2023. All further actions will be taken in cooperation and coordination with the justice authorities", it was said in the police announcement.

This is the third person to be arrested for attacks on journalists, who are reporting from the north of Kosovo, since tensions increased on May 26.

On June 16, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xelal Sveçla, announced that Nemanja Vlashkovic had been arrested in Leposavic, for the attack on journalists on May 29.

The day after, Sveçla said that Dalibor Spasic was also arrested at the Kufti crossing point in Jarinje - which connects Kosovo with Serbia - for attacks on journalists.

The Association of Journalists of Kosovo has said that since the beginning of the tensions in the municipalities in the north, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, 30 attacks on media workers have been registered.

Tensions in the north of Kosovo have increased since May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings.

Tensions culminated on May 29, when Serbian protesters clashed with KFOR members in Zveçan. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes.

The situation worsened on June 14 after the arrest of three Kosovo police officials. Serbia said they were arrested "deep" inside its territory, but Kosovo said they were patrolling in Kosovo territory, near the border line with Serbia in Leposavic.

The United States, Germany and the United Kingdom have demanded the immediate release of the three police officers. The US Department of State has said that "their arrest and detention under baseless charges have worsened the already tense situation".
