Former NATO spokesman: Jens Stoltenberg should commit more to security in Kosovo
Jamie Shea

Former NATO spokesman during the last war in Kosovo, Jamie Shea, has called for NATO troops to increase their commitment in Kosovo, due to high tensions with Serbia.

Shea has said that the situation in the Western Balkans is sensitive and according to him, the gathering of the Serbian army near the border with Kosovo does not help the situation.

He requested that the parties return to the dialogue table.

"There is no doubt that the situation in the Western Balkans is sensitive, which is why the visit of the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, is of particular importance. Since the spring, the situation has been very tense in Kosovo. First there was the issue of license plates, the elections in the north, and recently it culminated with the paramilitary action in Banjska of Zveçan, where a Kosovo policeman was killed. Stoltenberg's presence in the Balkans shows that NATO has its eyes on the region to provide security and peace," said Shea.

Furthermore, Shea estimates that NATO should take more measures for the security of Kosovo and place its troops along the border line in the north.

"Kosovo does not pose a danger to Serbia in any way and it is absurd to think otherwise. If it is certain what Prime Minister Kurti said that Belgrade has deployed anti-aircraft systems near the border with Kosovo, then this is something serious. Those anti-aircraft systems would present more danger to KFORI helicopters because Kosovo does not have such means available. I really hope that Serbia has not taken those actions. Considering all these circumstances, I consider it necessary to increase the number of KFOR soldiers in Kosovo and position them along the border in the north. In that part of the country, the transportation of weapons and other dangerous tools should be avoided at all costs," said Shea.

The former NATO spokesman said that Russia's influence in the Balkans has declined, however, according to him, Moscow still intends to create unrest.

"Russia always aims to create problems for the West and is looking for opportunities to do so. The Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg has warned about the danger and influence of Russia in Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia also encourages and supports populist forces everywhere in the Balkans to create divisions. However, today Russia's power has declined significantly and cannot be compared to the power of the West," stated Shea.

Just two days ago, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that it looks like a paramilitary and terrorist reorganization by Millan Radoicic and that Serbia has deployed anti-aircraft systems near the border with Kosovo.
