Germany and France have taken over the tense situation between Kosovo and Serbia. There have been violent protests in the north for almost a week and there is no withdrawal from either side.
But it seems that the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, have found a solution. They have asked for new elections to be held in the North, in order to escalate the situation. Today, they had meetings with President Osmani and Serbian leader Vucic, where they expressed their views on going to the elections.
" France and Germany asked the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia to organize new elections in the regions affected by the unrest as soon as possible ," said Macron, who added that the rules for elections were also clarified.
He said that in the coming weeks there will be a "clear decision" on the situation in the north of Kosovo and that this was agreed upon in the meetings with Vucic and Osman.
Osmani wrote on Twitter that he discussed the latest developments in Kosovo and "joint efforts for peace, security and stability" with the leaders of Germany and France.
Addressing reporters in Chisinau on the sidelines of the European Political Committee summit, Vučić said reducing tensions in northern Kosovo and establishing guarantees to avoid unilateral actions were the main topics during his meetings with Macron and Scholz.
" We need to convince people in the Balkans that compromise is not a bad thing. It's not easy, everyone is radicalized and no one wants to listen to normal ideas ," said Vucic.
The day before, there was Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who gave signals that he is ready to hold new elections in the north of Kosovo. " If there was a peaceful protest for early elections, it would have my understanding, but not the crowds with the letter Z [a pro-Russian symbol] firing at soldiers and policemen, grenades, shouting 'kill, kill.' We will not surrender our democratic republic to this fascist mob. If they want peaceful protests demanding early elections, they have a prime minister who is more than willing to listen to them and perhaps agree with them ," he said.
