The Ambassador of the United States of America, Jeffrey Hovenier, has stated that the reduction of tensions in the north is an emergency for the country.
In a statement to journalists, after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti said that the discussion was productive. He has also informed that he has repeated the demands that the mayors of the municipalities in the north exercise their duties from other facilities and not from the relevant institutions, as well as that the police be withdrawn.
The American ambassador emphasized that the USA wants the implementation of the Brussels and Ohrid agreements.
"We also talked about the importance of moving forward with the implementation of the Basic Agreement for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations. I expressed my concerns about the situation in the north. We encourage the Government of Kosovo to help reduce tensions and for the Government of Serbia to take steps to help achieve a better situation in the north," declared Hovenier.
Ambassador Hovenier further said that the US is thinking about what other means it has to encourage the Government of Kosovo, in order to calm the situation in the north.
Asked about the potential sanctions that the US could impose on Kosovo for non-coordination with it, Hovenier said that "there have been some consequences, but I hope we get through this situation so that there are no other consequences".
"I am not in a position to say (what the other consequences might be). But, the US is thinking about what other means it has to encourage the Government of Kosovo to do what we think is important to do now: achieve the calming of the situation", said Hovenier . He added that it is up to the Government of Kosovo to do this, and not the USA.
