O'Brien ultimatum Kosovo and Serbia: Fulfill the commitments made in the

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, and the US Assistant Secretary of State, James O'Brien, said on Monday that they talked on the phone about a range of issues related to the implementation of the agreement on the normalization of relations with Serbia and the discussions regarding the use of the dinar. Serbs in Kosovo, which has led to disagreements between the government in Pristina and Western diplomacy.

Mr. O'Brien wrote on the X network that with President Osmani he discussed "the importance of implementing monetary rules from Kosovo in order to benefit all citizens of Kosovo, including the Serbian minority community, and for the parties to fulfill all the commitments made in talks mediated by the European Union. For Kosovo, this includes the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority," he wrote.

President Osmani described the conversation with Mr. O'Brien as useful, while saying that he underlined "the essential importance of working together with our American allies for the protection of our freedom, independence and democracy." We also discussed Kosovo's steps for membership in the Council of Europe and the full and rapid implementation of the Brussels agreement", President Osmani wrote.

On Thursday, Kosovo and Serbia are expected to meet in a new round of talks to resolve the situation created after the regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, according to which the euro is the only currency that can be used for ready payments in Kosovo.

The regulation, which came into effect on February 1, prompted an angry reaction from Belgrade, and concerns from Western diplomacy about its impact on the lives of Kosovo Serbs who continue to be financially supported by Belgrade.

Diplomats have called on the government of Kosovo to suspend the regulation of the Central Bank and to give time to the affected citizens to adapt to the new situation.

Last week, the Committee for Politics and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recommended that Kosovo be invited to become a member of this Council. The parliamentary assembly is expected to vote during the month of April, while the final decision on Kosovo's membership is expected in the month of May, in the Council of Ministers of this mechanism.

The decision prompted an angry reaction from Belgrade. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Friday strongly criticized the West for its approach to Kosovo, while his country voted against it, although according to the agreement reached a year ago in Brussels and Ohrid, both sides promise not to hinder each other. in integration processes.

The agreement also provides for good neighborly relations and respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for the parties to fulfill all previous agreements, but do not include mutual recognition. / VOA
