Vjosa Osmani openly admits that she will seek to remain as president of Kosovo for another 5 years.
With the conclusion of early parliamentary elections in Kosovo, political attention is shifting to a hot issue: who will be the country's new President?
The current president, Vjosa Osmani, has officially confirmed her intention to run for a second term, thus opening the race for the highest institutional position in the country.
In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Osmani stated that she will hold consultations with political actors to secure the necessary parliamentary support, while expressing her belief that her work to date constitutes a strong basis for continuity.
" I intend to continue the good works for the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, for our country. I think that the many achievements and good works that are waiting for us and are at the door, should be continued because it is in the best interest of our Republic. However, I am also fully aware that this does not depend only on this assessment, but depends on two thirds of the deputies of the Republic of Kosovo, who must decide, I would say, on two fundamental points. The first is if they want to protect the best interest of the Republic, and the second, if they want to listen to the will of the citizens ," she said.
According to the Kosovo Constitution, the president is elected by the Assembly with a two-thirds majority, making this process a serious test of inter-party cohesion. Vjosa Osmani is expected to seek support beyond her own party, including new coalitions that will be formed after the certification of the December 28 election results.
In her interview, Osmani left open her political commitment even if she is not re-elected president, underlining that she will continue to contribute to politics and public service. This positions her as a figure with long-term ambitions in the Kosovar political scene, regardless of the outcome of the presidential race.
In her public message, Osmani emphasized that her priority remains preserving Kosovo's stability and advancing it in the international arena. She focused on the dialogue with Serbia, the signed agreements and the need for their implementation in order for Kosovo to strengthen its diplomatic position. She also commented on relations with the US, especially in the context of a new American administration under the leadership of Donald Trump.
On the eve of the start of the new governing mandate, the contest for the post of president is expected to be one of the key challenges for institutional stability in Kosovo. Osmani's goal of retaining the post will depend not only on her political balance, but also on parliamentary arithmetic and the new political agreements that will emerge after the elections. The new stage has just begun.
