The situation in Kosovo escalates, the Serbs block the roads at the border

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced today that the passage of buses and trucks from Kosovo, near the border points in Jarinje and Merdar, in the territory of Serbia, has been prohibited.

Minister Donika Gërvalla's chief of staff, Sharr Jakupi, has announced that at the moment it is not even safe for cars to pass due to the ongoing protests.

"We inform you that in the territory of Serbia, near the border points in Jarinje and Merdar, due to the ongoing protests, it is not possible for buses and trucks coming from Kosovo to pass. It is not safe for cars to pass at the moment either", he wrote on Twitter.

The Ministry has called on citizens who are traveling and are in the territory of Serbia to use the Mutivode, Dheu i Bardhë border points or take the route through North Macedonia. While those who have not entered Serbia, please do not travel through this country.

According to the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the crossing point in Bërnjak is completely blocked.

The blockades are believed to have been caused as a result of the protests that are being held in Serbian territory.

According to the ministry, even the passage of cars is not safe.

In some groups on the Telegram social network, Serbs have said that the roads have been blocked by truck drivers with Serbian goods, as a sign of revolt against the decision of the Kosovo authorities not to allow trucks with Serbian license plates and goods to enter the territory of Kosovo. since last week.

The Government of Kosovo has made a decision, on June 14, to tighten border controls with Serbia. The decision was taken after the arrest of three members of the Kosovo Police by the Serbian authorities.

The Kosovo authorities have said that it is about their abduction in the territory of Kosovo, while Belgrade has said that they were arrested in the Serbian territory.

According to the Serbian authorities, the policemen are suspected of having committed the criminal offences: production, possession, possession and illegal trafficking of weapons and explosives.

These violations are punishable by up to 12 years of imprisonment. The international community has called for their release, without conditions.

These developments follow the tensions in the north of Kosovo since May 26.

On that day, the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north - inhabited by a majority of Serbs - entered the municipal buildings, with the help of Kosovo Police units.

The local Serbs have opposed something like this and as a result there have been continuous protests.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, has said that he will invite the representatives of Kosovo and Serbia this week in Brussels, an urgent meeting for crisis management.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has refused to meet with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, while the latter has not yet decided whether he will participate in the meeting in Brussels.

The international community has addressed three requests to the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, regarding the situation in the north:

- The extension of the situation there
- The holding of new elections
- The return to the dialogue for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations, mediated by the European Union.

Kurti, on the other hand, came up with his proposal.

Kurti's 5-point plan for reducing tensions in the north contains the following demands:

- The rule of law in the four municipalities in the north, which means the identification, prosecution and fair trial of all members of criminal groups that have attacked the Police, NATO troops and journalists - Violent groups should immediately withdraw from the territory of
Kosovo and any criminal act against Kosovo institutions
- Kosovo Police, NATO members and EULEX - is prohibited from conducting joint security assessments, to guarantee a safe and risk-free environment for everyone.
- The government of Kosovo should coordinate with all the actors and announce early elections in the four municipalities in the north
- Kosovo and Serbia should return to the dialogue mediated by Brussels, and a high-level meeting should be held during this week

On June 16, the American envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, said that Kosovo will face consequences if it continues to ignore the advice of the United States - that the new Albanian presidents should not work from municipal buildings in the north.

Kosovo and Serbia are part of the dialogue mediated by the EU, for the normalization of relations, since 2011.

The parties have signed a number of agreements, but not all have been implemented.
