Kosovo police find cameras on the eastern border with Serbia

Kosovo police said Monday they found two cameras with solar panels on the eastern border with Serbia, which they suspect were set up to monitor the route of suspected smugglers.

In a press release on Tuesday, the Police said that the cameras were placed on a mountain road from the village of Ranillug in Kosovo, towards the village of Konçul in Serbia.

The police detained a 30-year-old man with dual citizenship: Kosovar and Serbian at the scene, the announcement states.

"The vehicle with Serbian license plates, driven by JS, 30 years old, was also stopped in the aforementioned place... The same is suspected to have gone there to take care of the camera that the police units had already taken earlier," the announcement states.

By order of the prosecutor, he was detained for 48 hours, while his vehicle was seized, according to the announcement.

The police added that the suspect had used "this vehicle only for smuggling goods through illegal routes".

In July 2023, the Government of Kosovo made a decision to ban the import of goods from Serbia, for "security" reasons, when three Kosovo police officers were arrested by the Serbian police.

In December, Kosovo Police removed hundreds of cameras in Serb-majority municipalities in the north of the country.

Previously, it had also removed cameras in Kllokot, Partesh and Ranillug - municipalities with a Serbian majority south of the Ibër River./  REL
