The United States Embassy in Kosovo has stated that after the December 28 elections, it looks forward to working closely with the new government to advance the common agenda with Kosovo, including resuming the Strategic Dialogue, suspended since September due to disagreements with the Kurti government.
In a written response to Radio Free Europe, the US Embassy spokesperson said that " we hope that our partnership will deepen with the new government of Kosovo ," while emphasizing that the resumption of the Strategic Dialogue will require concrete actions to advance regional peace, stability, and economic cooperation.
This signal from American diplomacy comes just days after acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti declared in a television interview that relations with the US are “very good,” and that disagreements have always been related to Serbia, not to bilateral relations. He added that in the field of security and defense, relations “have never been better.”
However, in September of this year, Washington announced the indefinite suspension of the Strategic Dialogue, expressing disappointment with the Kurti government’s approach to northern Kosovo. The US Embassy at the time stressed that the government’s unilateral actions had increased instability and insecurity in the country, especially after the decisions to change Serbian license plates, ban the dinar, and close Serbian institutions.
Kurti has defended his actions as an attempt to extend the rule of law to the north, citing the Constitution and laws of Kosovo. According to him, the suspension of the Dialogue came as a result of a clash with illegal Serbian structures, against which he has refused to compromise.
The US-Kosovo Strategic Dialogue has previously included high-level discussions on key issues such as security, energy, the environment, economic and diplomatic cooperation. It is seen as a platform that strengthens bilateral ties and supports Kosovo's international integration.
