The spokesperson of the European Union, Peter Stano, has said that the EU has not yet received an answer from the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, regarding the invitation for a meeting this week in Brussels.
" We have said enough about our expectations, possible consequences and steps. The main issue is to have a meeting here in Brussels and about that, at this moment, I have nothing to specify" , said Stano, during a media conference.
However, Stano added that "until the end of the week, there is still time", but that he cannot confirm any date or time for the meeting invited by the High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell.
" We are waiting and we hope that we can have the date and time of the meeting and then discuss the modalities. We have no time to waste. Now is the time for action, not for words and speculation ," said Stano.
REL diplomatic sources say that the meeting can take place on June 22 or 23, while they also mention the possibility that Kurti and Vučič will not have a direct meeting but only bilateral meetings with Borrell.
Since the end of May, tensions in the north of Kosovo increased after the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings, amid opposition from the local Serbs.
The European Union has informed the parties, according to EU diplomatic sources, that there will be consequences if they do not show responsibility and readiness for a meeting and for immediate steps to reduce tensions.
The day before, Kurti said that he is "ready and interested" to go to Brussels.
