The details of the fire that engulfed the hospital in Peja yesterday are coming to light. According to the official announcement, it is learned that the fire was deliberately set by an as yet unidentified person.
It is suspected that the fire was set by a masked person. Peja Hospital has rejected the first statement where it was suspected that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault.
Investigations and a review of security cameras revealed that the fire was deliberately set by a masked person.
"From the first hours after the attack, after verifying the recordings on the security cameras, we realized that it was a criminal, intentional attack on our state institution, but after consultations with the investigation, we did not immediately publish this information in order not to hindered the investigations, as we were fully synchronized with the law enforcement agencies", the communiqué states. It is further stated that; "early Wednesday morning, around 02:20 after midnight, a person, according to security camera footage, forcibly entered the room where the Information Technology equipment is and set fire to this room. This unprecedented act has caused great material damage and deeply shocked our staff and patients. Fortunately, however, apart from material damage, there was no loss of life or loss of data. This attack has hit us in the heart of our activity and has made us feel the uncertainty that this situation created by criminal acts has brought.
In the premises where the attack took place, there is also the hospital archive, full of documents from the establishment of the hospital, and most of the hospital beds are concentrated in this block of the hospital. We are lucky that the fire was localized quickly, because otherwise we would have had a tragedy, because the attacker endangered the lives of hundreds of patients and our staff. Peja Hospital is a health institution that provides services to four municipalities of the Peja region. With a lot of effort and sacrifice, in difficult situations, our staff strives to provide quality and uninterrupted services to our patients. The attack we experienced is a heavy blow for all of us, but it strengthens our determination to continue our humanitarian and professional mission. We are all committed to ensuring that our hospital operates safely and effectively, regardless of the challenges we face.
The Hospital Management thanks the investigative bodies from the Kosovo Police and the Prosecutor's Office for the high intensity and readiness in the investigation of this monstrous crime. "Their dedication and professionalism are a great support for us in this difficult moment. We hope that the perpetrator of this criminal act will be brought to justice as soon as possible and receive the deserved punishment. In the meantime, we will continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients," the statement said.
