Oslo and Berlin will be connected by train again for the first time in more than two decades, thanks to a new direct rail service expected to launch in 2028.

The project is the result of collaboration between Vy, DSB and Deutsche Bahn, thus restoring an international connection that had been missing for years in Northern Europe.

The service will be operated with modern ICE L trains, which will travel the route through major cities such as Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Gothenburg.

Stops are planned in several important cities along the route, including Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Trollhättan, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Lund, as well as at Copenhagen Airport and København H central station. After Denmark, the line will continue towards Odense, Kolding, Padborg and Hamburg, to end in Berlin.

According to operator Vy, the journey from Oslo to Copenhagen will take around seven hours, while the full Oslo–Berlin route will take approximately 15 hours.

This line marks the first return of a direct rail connection between Norway and Denmark in more than 20 years . The service is expected to operate twice daily in both directions starting in the summer of 2028, with timetables and prices to be published closer to the launch date.

Vy 's CEO , Gro Bakstad, described the project as an important step in strengthening Norway's connections with Europe and creating new opportunities for direct lines with other European cities.

Meanwhile, Michael Peterson emphasized that train travel is increasingly becoming a strong alternative to cars and planes, especially in the face of rising fuel prices and demand for more sustainable transportation.
