A story like in the movies has been recorded in Wales, where Halfina Eddy-Evans, after accidentally throwing away the hard drive of her ex-partner James Howells, regretted it when she learned that it was worth 682 million euros, as it contained the code for Bitcoins.
James is now fighting to get a permit that would allow him to search the junkyard for the hard drive that makes him a millionaire.
He had started buying Bitcoins as early as 2009 and in the meantime had completely forgotten about his cryptocurrency account. After finding out how much his 8,000 Bitcoins are now worth, he wants to find the hard drive, but Halfina says she trashed it, but at his request.
The disc ended up in the trash nine or ten years ago, and the couple broke up in the meantime. After James experimented with cryptocurrencies for weeks in 2009, he stopped doing so after complaints from Halfina. The computer he used to buy Bitcoins was in the bedroom, so the partner had expressed concern about the noise of the fan while she slept.
After that, James sold the components for parts, but kept the hard drive. He later transferred all the photos and music from it to the new computer, although he could not transfer the small file containing the Bitcoin codes because it was not compatible with Apple's operating system. He told the British media that he put the disc in a drawer and forgot about it.
Halfina now explains to the British tabloid "Daily Mail" that the disc was found in a black bag along with other rubbish, which her ex-partner asked her to throw away. "Yes, I threw the trash away, he asked me himself. I had no idea what was in the bag, I willingly left it in the landfill. It was supposed to be his responsibility, but I wanted to help. I hope they find him because he will shut him up, I don't want a cent of his money. I'm sick and tired of hearing about it, it's not my fault he lost it!” Halfina told the Daily Mail.
The landfill is now run by Newport council and they refused to give James permission to search in the area, citing environmental permission and potential negative effects on the environment.
He has also offered them a donation of 10% of the income from the found Bitcoins, but they have not accepted. James has already started legal proceedings and is seeking compensation of 593 million euros for "deprivation of wealth".
The landfill holds more than 1.4 million tons of waste, but James says he has narrowed down the disk's location to an area containing 100,000 tons. "This problem will never go away, I will always be looking for the treasure because it is becoming more and more valuable every day," James told Fortune.
The value of Bitcoin recently reached $80,000, which is an increase of 80% this year and the highest record since its creation.
