The first full trailer for "Digger," the new comedy-drama from Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu, has been released, revealing an unusual transformation for Tom Cruise.
The actor plays Digger Rockwell, an oil baron known as "the most powerful man in the world," who faces the consequences of an ecological disaster that threatens to plunge the world into nuclear conflict. To save humanity, he embarks on a dangerous mission to right the wrongs of the past.
In the trailer, Cruise appears with gray hair, a rounded belly, and a strong Southern accent, bringing a completely different character to the roles that made him famous.
The film is expected to be released in theaters worldwide in early October.
During the trailer launch in Los Angeles, Tom Cruise described "Digger" as one of the biggest challenges of his career.
"I've never done anything before that challenged me in this way. When you see the film, you'll realize it's completely original ," the actor said.
Cruise revealed that his collaboration with Iñárritu began about seven years ago, when the director read the entire script aloud to him over the course of several days.
"I wanted to understand the way he saw this story, so that I could contribute as best I could. It was an incredible experience ," he said.
The film's cast also includes John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde.
On the other hand, Iñárritu revealed that the idea for "Digger" was born immediately after finishing the film "The Revenant" in 2015.
"I didn't have a script, but an obsession that followed me for years. I knew who this character was, how he spoke and how he saw the world. It took me almost 10 years to find the right way to tell this story. It is absurd, dangerous, but also deeply comic, because the greatest comedy is born from tragedy ," the director said.
"Digger" was shot with VistaVision technology, a high-resolution analog format from the 1950s that has recently been brought back into major motion picture productions.
