It's been a challenging week for Italian food. Italy's agriculture minister, Francesco Lollobrigida, was furious when he saw a jar of carbonara sauce on the shelves of the Delhaize store inside the Parliament in Brussels, containing pancetta instead of guanciale, what a metaphor.
However, presenting food as Italian is a huge financial issue. The agricultural group Coldiretti estimates that the “Italian counterfeit products scandal” is costing the country 120 billion euros a year. Italy has also applied to have Italian cuisine included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list (which basically means you can’t mess with it).
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party plans to write to the speaker of parliament, Roberta Metsola, to complain about the use of the Italian flag on a jar of pasta sauce that offended her.
Of course, the battle for Italian cuisine isn't just taking place on Parliament's supermarket shelves. The European Commission will present a list of sectors it wants exempt from US tariffs, and that's likely to include pasta.
