"America," a pure gold sculpture in the shape of a toilet, has been sold at auction at Sotheby's.
The auction house began bidding by rounding the asking price to $10 million, but the work attracted only a single telephone bid. With Sotheby's commissions, that meant the toilet cost a total of $12.1 million.
The 18-carat toilet was created by Maurizio Cattelan, the same artist who created the duct tape banana that sold last year for $6.2 million.
After the sale, the house announced that the buyer was a famous American brand, but declined to provide further details.
