Have you ever wondered if smartphones are spying on you? Tech companies vehemently deny this, but user experience tells a different story. To prove it, a group of technologists conducted a simple but shocking experiment.
Participants tried to avoid any online searches and clicks on a specific topic. Then, they started talking out loud, several times a day, about a random product like pet food, kitchen appliances, or vacation destinations.
Within 24 hours, over 65% of them reported seeing ads directly related to “casual conversations.”
Are microphones always on? Experts say it's technically possible. Many apps have access to your microphone even when you're not using it. Also, voice analysis algorithms are now so advanced that they can process sounds in real time without consuming much battery. Although there's no evidence that companies are abusing this data, the fact that our devices can be listening all the time remains concerning.
