Halloween/ Pagan, Roman, Christian or simply American holiday?

You may hear some people say that "Halloween is an ancient pagan holiday" or that "Halloween is a Roman holiday" or even that "Halloween is a Christian holiday" or simply that "Halloween is a uniquely American holiday."

None of this is completely correct or completely wrong.

In fact, the traditions associated with Halloween come from many different sources. Harvest festivals existed in countless cultures, from the Roman festival of Pomona to the Celtic festival of Samhain.

There is also the Christian holiday of "All Saints' Day" on November 1 (for Roman Catholics and Protestants), during which people would go door to door asking for food in exchange for prayers.

And there is also the traditional Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos.

Many of these traditions built on each other and all contributed to the way we celebrate today!
