Catherine Connolly's campaign has taken the internet by storm after a video of her showing off her amazing soccer skills during the presidential campaign went viral. Despite being 68 years old and wearing high heels, Connolly was seen doing some "styles" with a soccer ball and then playing basketball with two children, where she showed off just as much skill.
On the “Connolly for President” account on the X platform, her team posted the video with a humorous caption that tied into the campaign’s core message: “Whether in sports, politics or community – the key is to keep reaching.”
Meanwhile, fellow presidential candidate Jim Gavin decided to withdraw from the race for Áras an Uachtaráin, following strong criticism he received over a rental issue from 2009. The former Dublin coach faced allegations that he owed a former tenant €3,300, an issue that had come to light through reports in the Irish Independent.
During an interview with RTE, Gavin admitted that he was investigating the case and did not yet have “all the information.” He explained that the problem arose during a difficult financial period for his family, when he had also lost his apartment in Blackhall Square, Dublin.
He later stated: “I made a mistake that is inconsistent with my character and the standards I set for myself. I am taking steps to resolve the matter.” He added that he had reflected on the impact of the situation on his family and friends and that, for this reason, he had decided to withdraw from the presidential race immediately.
Prime Minister Micheál Martin welcomed Gavin's decision, calling it "the right one." He said: "Jim has acknowledged that he made a mistake and is aware that the office of President is the pinnacle of public service. He does not want to bring controversy to this institution."
A recent poll showed Gavin was struggling to gain support, with just 15% of first preference votes, behind Heather Humphreys on 23% and Catherine Connolly leading on 32%.
