The hegemony of mobile phones is coming to an end; what technology will replace

When the first mobile phones appeared, few believed in their mass adoption. Today, we can't imagine living a single day without these clever little boxes.

Everyone has them, from children to the elderly. Today's phones are like small computers that we can put in our pockets. From a technological point of view, twenty years ago we couldn't even dream of something like this.

However, today it is a relatively outdated concept, which will be replaced in the near future by something even more innovative.

According to current predictions, mobile phones will disappear from our pockets and be replaced by something completely different. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and current head of Meta, has long been involved in more than just social networks.

In recent years, it has invested billions of dollars in the so-called metaverse, a virtual space where people can meet, work and have fun in a completely different way than they do today.

What will replace mobile phones?

Replacing mobile phones is no easy task, as today's phones are not just for making calls, but also for connecting communication, entertainment and organizing the whole day. Zuckerberg argues that smartphones are just a temporary stage of evolution and their end is simply a logical step forward.

Technology companies are already working hard to develop alternatives that are even more practical and easy to use, and that will also include augmented reality (AR) technology. You can now buy the first smart glasses on the market that allow you to see messages, notifications, maps or even photos in front of your eyes.

True augmented reality

Meta is working on a prototype of AR glasses called Orion, which will surpass even smart glasses. The Orion model uses a smart bracelet that reads muscle signals from the hand and, thanks to a special computer unit, can control the virtual environment with your movements, without having to wear anything.

The music of the future? No, not at all. The Orion is expected to hit the market next year, but with a price tag of $10,000, it's unlikely to be widely available. For everyday users, there's the Artemis device, which is expected to be smaller, more practical, and more affordable. We could buy it as early as 2027.

The technological ecosystem of the future

What are today's mobile phones, watches or smart rings will soon be surpassed by the most advanced connectivity of devices we can wear.

One of these innovations will be headphones with a built-in camera. These headphones will use artificial intelligence to analyze the user's environment in real time. Also in development are new prototypes of smartwatches that can track movements and, together with smart glasses, will create an interconnected system of technological devices that will not require the use of a smartphone.

The end of mobile phones?

It may sound like science fiction, but technological advancements are real. Not only Meta, but also Apple, Google, and Microsoft are investing in the development of intelligent technologies that use artificial intelligence.

Whether – or rather how quickly – their hi-tech devices will prevail depends largely on the users. Society is skeptical of any innovation and we approach new products with caution. Paradoxically, the most difficult thing in the entire development process is not creating the software or designing the devices, but how to convince the users.
