Brazil, the land of coffee, samba and football, can claim another advantage, as it has the fortune and privilege of "embracing" a large gold deposit on its soil, which could transform it back into a global superpower.
In the state of Pará, and specifically in the Serra Pelanta region, the pace of mining operations in the region's gold mine is frenetic. "We are three meters away from the gold," enthuses the 77-year-old mine owner, Chico Osorio. Using his crutches and the help of a small cabin, he managed to descend into a 150-meter-deep pit to examine with his own eyes the progress of the gold search and, as he claims, "some of the walls may contain gold."
Brazil has all the conditions to become a global power
In 1992, the Brazilian government closed the mine for safety reasons, as mining was in decline. However, by then, Osorio had managed to secure almost 700 kilograms of gold, some of which he deposited in the bank, while the rest he used to buy several small planes.
"The hardest part is getting to the gold. After that, there's no shortage of money and equipment..." said Chico Osorio. Another major problem is that the cooperative already has a debt of about $10 million, according to information from the lawyers in charge of the case.
"My wish is for the mine to work again. There are untold riches down here," added the cooperative's president, while Chico Osorio explained: "Do you see those shiny peaks? It's gold."
